Vision GT Spotlight: VW GTI Supersport

The updated version of the Vision Gran Turismo concept by Volkswagen has arrived in Gran Turismo 6 through the v1.18 patch and I'll be running through the main things you need to know about this tricked-out Golf.

The GTI Supersport takes a different design approach to the GTI Roadster from last year. It is based on the Design Vision GTI from 2013 with even more extreme styling features including a revised bodykit, new wheels, racing decals and a huge rear wing giving it a more race-ready appearance.

The twin-turbo VR6 engine is carried over from the GTI Roadster so it produces 550hp (578hp with an oil change) and despite the extra bodywork and a closed roof, weighs exactly the same as its predecessor at 1200kg. The only statistical difference is the performance points where the Supersport has a 6 point advantage over the Roadster, primarily due to the additional downforce generated.

It should come as no suprise the GTI Supersport feels similar to the GTI Roadster on track. Both cars were tested on Brands Hatch GP, a track loaded with sweeping corners to test the limits of grip. Powered by the same engine, both cars have similar engine tones. If there was one thing I noticed it's that the Supersport felt more stable around high speed corners. Try taking the corners at the same speed in the Roadster and you will find yourself kicking up dust clouds from the grass and sand pits. Of course, with the extra downforce generated by the Supersport, this handling advantage is to be expected.

Even with the added stability, the Supersport does not feel any less fun than the Roadster. Like its open top counterpart, the Supersport can powerslide out of corners and the car is just as potent. The best part about having more downforce is that more power can be used through the corners, so the Supersport feels faster around a track.

So there you have it, the guys over at Wolfsburg have added another sublime addition to the Vision Gran Turismo line-up in Gran Turismo 6. The Supersport can be obtained for free just by completing the latest seasonal event on the Nurburgring short course for a limited time only.
