GT Academy: Round 3 Overview

As race camp for GT Academy edges ever closer, a new playing field is set for the virtual competition as users take an LMP2 car around the prestigious Spa-Francorchamps GP circuit to compete for a seat in Motorsport. The car players get to take hold of is the Greaves Motorsport Zytek-Nissan, another car driven by the successful participants of previous GT Academy events (like the GT-R GT3 in Round 2) which earned the team a podium finish in their class at Le Mans.

As usual, participants must have posted a valid lap time in Round 2 which beats the bronze target time to take part in this round. To progress further, players have to post a lap time quicker than 2:25 in Round 3, which coincidentally awards you with a bronze trophy. 2:13 and 2:16 are the times required for Gold and Silver respectively. To win the new Zytek-Nissan LMP2, you simply have to complete a lap around Spa, whether the lap is valid or not.

Once you take the Nissan LMP2 around Spa, you notice this is a finely balanced car. The Prototype feels composed around the high speed corners of Spa as long as you do not push it beyond its limits. The Zytek-Nissan packs 449hp, weighs 900kg and is rated at 609PP making this a strong performer.

A firm favourite amongst many racing fans, Spa-Francorchamps is a fun circuit to drive on but difficult to master, which is probably why it was used for the last round of GT Academy last year. Like Brands Hatch, a good lap time can be won or lost through the first corner. Here at Spa, the first corner you are introduced to is the 'La Source' hairpin. The speed drops greatly, as does the stability of the car.

Things do not get easier once you have passed the first corner; after the downward slope you are thrown into the infamous Eau Rouge corner, which is extremely challenging to complete without lifting off the throttle, even in this car. As you near the end of the lap and pass Blanchimont, players have to deal with the Bus Stop Chicane. After spending a good two minutes perfecting your lines around most of the circuit, how it ends up greatly relies on how you control the car through this low speed section.

As you would expect with GT Academy, the difficulty has escalated but it is worth giving a go for the large prize fund and free car. Furthermore, it also raises the question of what the final round will involve. The new 1250hp FWD GT-R LM is confirmed to be the car selected in the final round, but the course remains unknown. I'm sure many players are eager to see how the uniquely designed LMP1 handles round a track, be sure to check back here in a couple of weeks for a quick review!
