GT Academy: Round 4 Overview

The ultimate round of GT Academy opens today in Gran Turismo 6 and this is the part where the competition gets serious. If you were one of the fastest drivers in the first three rounds, the only thing you achieved over the thousands of Gold trophy winners was some bragging rights. In the final round, the fastest drivers get the opportunity to prove they are worthy of a career in Motorsport by winning a slot for the GT Academy Race Camp in Abu Dhabi.

The challenge involves driving the newly-released Nismo GT-R LM around the Le Mans Race Circuit as fast as you can without going off track or hitting any obstacles. In order to achieve a Gold trophy, the target lap time is 3:37.000. For a Silver trophy, a time of 3:42.000 is needed and Bronze requires a more leisurely time of 4:02.000. Top times on the leaderboard are under the 3:30.000 mark.

It has been a rumor for a while that the Nismo GT-R LM was the car of choice for the fourth round, which made sense as the car had to be a step up from the Nissan-Zytek LMP2 featured in Round 3 and the logical follow-up would be the LMP1. The v1.19 update confirmed that was the case and the virtual representation of Nissan's innovative Prototype machine is the car that gives a number of gamers a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Under that lengthy front end, the GT-R LM houses a petrol-electric hybrid power unit producing 604hp, with all that power being sent to the front wheels. That sounds like a recipe for torque steer and shredded tyres, but Nissan is no stranger to developing Le Mans Prototypes so I would imagine they have done enough testing to prevent the GT-R LM being an understeering nightmare. In Gran Turismo 6, Nissan's LMP1 is rapid in a straight line, despite the KERS running out of juice after a few seconds of wide open throttle. As you would expect, you are greeted with a lot of wheelspin if you dare to go full throttle out of a slow corner but the car has tons of grip and the rear never steps out of line, unless you drive erratically enough to force it to.

Round 4 of GT Academy is the most demanding as it requires players to test the limits of the GT-R LM for three and a half minutes as they go round Circuit De La Sarthe. What makes the challenge more difficult is that this car features unique characteristics unlike any other vehicle in the game so players would need to adapt quickly to stand a chance of mastering the handling of this Prototype and secure a winning spot on the leaderboard.
