Los Angeles Motorshow 2015: Hottest new cars on the floor

It is not only the rear wheel drive Lamborghini Huracan worth taking note of in the Los Angeles Motorshow. California's biggest motorshow is back for another year which provides car manufacturers with a platform to debut some of their hottest new cars to the public. This posts features just a taste of what you can expect to see in the show and on the streets in the near future.

Alfa Romeo Giulia

I'm going to kick off with Alfa Romeo's highly anticipated rear wheel drive sports saloon, the Giulia, which set to take on the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C Class. While the 500hp Giulia Quadrifoglio was revealed a few months ago, details about the lesser models in the range have been disclosed. At the lower end of the range you have the 2.2 JTDM diesel unit available with 150hp, 180hp or 210hp, with the former two engines available with a manual gearbox. Power figures for the petrol model start at 200hp with the automatic-only turbocharged 2.0 litre and can be specified with 250hp or 280hp. Both engines have at least one all wheel drive variant.

Fiat 124 Spider

Another Italian machine worth taking a look at is the Fiat 124 Spider. Like the Fiat 500 currently on sale, the 124 features retro design elements from its forebear. If the dimensions and interior design appear familiar to you, that's because this car shares its underpinnings with the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5. While this means it should provide the same handling characteristics in its Japanese sibling, the power delivery will be provided in a different manner. While you have the option of two naturally aspirated units in the Mazda, Fiat powers their compact roadster with a turbocharged engine. The 1.4 litre engine found in the Abarth powers the 124 and is rated at 140 hp and 160 hp for the European and American models respectively.

Honda Civic Coupe

While the Honda Civic is supposed to be seen as a mundane family car, I thought I would include it in this list of exciting cars because... well, look at it! The sleek roofline and fastback rear end makes the Civic appear as if it was designed to be a coupe in the first place. Like the US-spec Sedan, the Civic coupe will be available with two petrol engines, a normally aspirated 2.0 litre or turbocharged 1.5. Bear in mind this is the conventional model - Imagine how cool an Si or Type R variant will look! Oh yeah, and do consider selling the coupe in the 3 door, Honda.

Mercedes SL

If there was a facelift to prove an unattractive car can be altered to look stunning, the new SL is proof of that. The R231 was unveiled with a mixed reception, while I think the R230 it replaced looked miles better. What Mercedes has done for the mid-life cycle update has actually made the R231 bearable to lay your eyes on. The front end has undergone a radical overhaul, making it look akin to the AMG GT. The back has been through some changes too with restyled tail lights and a new diffuser. The entry level SL400 has a tweaked turbocharged V6 with 367hp (35 hp more than before), but the SL500, SL63 and SL65 engine units remain unchanged.
Range Rover Evoque Convertible

"Why?", I hear you ask? If Nissan can get away with selling an open top crossover, why can't Land Rover? The Range Rover Evoque has gone topless and is ready for the Californian streets where you are most likely to see it. No wonder Los Angeles was the chosen place for the Evoque convertible to make its debut. For those "wind in your hair" thrills whilst sitting in a raised driving position, you have to pay a premium price - The Evoque convertible starts from £47,500, which is over £5,000 more than the equivalent 3 door coupe.
