Vision GT Spotlight: VW Vision GTI Roadster

Last week, Volkswagen teased a GTI Supersport Concept which hinted at the German manufacturer unveiling a second Vision Gran Turismo in Gran Turismo 6. With the news being announced on April Fools day, I did react to the news with caution but things appear to be legit with no announcement of the teaser being a joke. Before the second VW Vision GTI comes out, let's remind ourselves of the Vision GTI Roadster revealed nearly a year ago and made available in GT6 through the v1.09 update last June.

The GTI Roadster is one of my favourite cars from the Vision GT project, it resembles a normal Golf GTI so it has a futuristic design whilst maintaining contemporary elements and it features an interior unlike most other VGT offerings. To give it more road presence, the model featured in the images is painted in chrome purple. Love it or hate it, it is a bold paint job which complements the rakish design.

For a test drive, I took the VW to the Red Bull Ring, host of the Austrian GP on the Formula 1 calendar which also made its GT6 debut last summer in the update containing the VisionGTI. The Turbocharged VR6 engine pushes out 503hp, nearly double the amount you get the road-going Golf R Mark 6. Despite having that much power in a lightweight package, the car still feels very manageable thanks to the 4-wheel-drive system. It may be short on power compared to the last two cars from Fuji industries I tested in the last VGT Spotlight, but the VW felt more fun to drive. Since the car isn't loaded with downforce, it doesn't feel so heavy through the corners and it is easier to get the weight where you want it to be.

If the Vision GTI Roadster is anything to go by, Volkswagen could have an ace up their sleeve if the upcoming Vision GT concept is positioned the 'second level' concept car, as the Roadster is only the first level and that has already set the bar quite high. On the other end of the Vision GT spectrum, there is the ostentatious Bertone VGT set to arrive in the coming months, but I've got my sights firmly set on what Wolfsburg has to offer next.
