GT Academy: A glance at Round 2

The second round of GT Academy is now open so players of Gran Turismo 6 are being put to the test to prove they are worthy of competing in real life Motorsports with a more demanding challenge. Open until the Round 3 opens on the 19th of May, participants get the chance to blitz around Brands Hatch in a GT-R NISMO GT3 Team RJN, driven by the successful participants of GT Academy in the past.

If you took part in Round 1, you would be too familiar with encountering a shed load of understeer when attempting to set a hot lap in the GT-R NISMO around Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. I'm happy to report that the GT3-spec GT-R in Round 2 is much more satisfying to drive and it is easier to get its tail out, so mastering corners is less of a headache now.

As ever with GT Academy, progressing onto the next stage requires a Bronze medal. This means you must set a lap time of 1:37.000 or quicker. Setting a time below 1:30.000 gets you a Silver medal and getting a 1:28.000 awards you with a Gold medal. Top times on the global rankings are close to the 1:20 mark.

Being set at Brands Hatch, you have to be wary of its infamous first corner, Paddock Hill bend. Carrying the right amount of speed is essential for maintaining momentum through the corner. Too much speed leads you into the sand pit while not carrying enough speed is a missed opportunity to shave a few tenths off the overall lap time.

At low speed, the GT-R is keen on throwing its tail out and can snap the other direction in an instant when you try to correct it. If low speed stability proves to be an issue, activate traction control. The ideal setting is 2 to make power slides easier to control and it is not high enough to compromise power significantly. Druids (following on from turn one) is another corner where the rear of the car can step out. Coming out of the corner, you would want to manage your throttle input to avoid unsettling the car and kicking up a smoke cloud.

For the rest of the lap, you encounter corners where you can carry more speed through. That's what makes Brands Hatch a nice course to drive on, it's mostly a high speed circuit and the downforce of the GT3 GT-R keeps the car under control. At the end of my post about Round 1, I was doubting I would manage a Gold medal but I was able to dial in a 1:26:603, nearly a second and a half quicker than the target! This good run can't last for much longer, let's see what happens in Round 3 then...
