New Alpine Celebration Concept breaks cover!

Alpine is showing they are progressively taking steps in returning to the performance road car market with the world première of the '60th Anniversary' concept car. Once best known for producing Renault-powered sports cars, the French firm chose the Circuit De La Sarthe (venue hosting the 24 hours of Le Mans this weekend) to be the setting where the new car makes its début.

Finished in a traditional blue and orange livery, the new Alpine is a sleek looking coupé featuring design aspects heavily influenced by the rear-engined A110 from the 1960's. However, that's all we can appreciate now as the main purpose of the 60th Anniversary concept is to be a design study to celebrate 60 years of Alpine - there are no details about what is underneath the skin, but it is most likely to feature a mid-engined layout with an engine sourced from the Renault Sport Megane.

This car is the follow-up to the 2012 A110-50 concept which was based on the Renault DeZir concept and utilised a V6 engine sourced from the Megane Trophy car. With no intention to put such an exuberant machine into production just yet, do not expect the first road-going Alpine to produce such a spine-tingling sound like the A110-50. Chances are this new concept car is much closer to what we will see once Alpine starts rolling cars off the production line. Expect the new Alpine to be up against the likes of the Alfa Romeo 4C, Lotus Elise and Porsche Cayman.
