New(ish) Fiat 500 unveiled!

Even after being around for 8 years, the Fiat 500 is still a fresh looking supermini. However, that has not stopped the Italian manufacturer from giving the 500 a styling reboot. Before you say "it looks exactly the same as its predecessor!" I must point out Fiat claims to have made 1,800 revisions from the 2008 model. By the time you have figured out all of them, there would probably be another refreshed 500 with more hard-to-find styling enhancements, so let's identify which changes are most prominent.

Starting with the front, the fog lights have been packaged in an ovular shape and feature LED lights. While it may not be noticeable initially, the entire front bumper has received an overhaul with new chrome bars and grille pattern. Over at the back, there are new rear lights which are shaped like a ring around a section of coloured bodywork, giving the car a more premium look. The application of chrome has also been revised on the rear bumper, positioned lower with a thinner profile. The new Fiat 500 will feature even more customisable options, including a range of exterior colours and decals to ensure buyers can make their 500 as unique as they wish.

Over on the inside, the old analogue readouts for the gauges have been eschewed in favour of a digital display. In the middle of the dashboard, you will find a new 5-inch touch screen monitor which can display any form of media available. Other than that, there are not many new things to be found but I would imagine a handful of the 1,800 changes can be found here.

As for engines, the four-cylinder 1.2 petrol kicks the range with a modest 69hp, while a pair of 875cc Turbocharged units step things up with 85hp and 105hp. Alternatively, a 1.3 diesel is available with 95hp. Abarth models are due to be announced at a later date, likely to be equipped with a turbocharged 1.4 petrol engine.

Despite all the changes the new 500 has been through, it still remains quirky and fashionable. Sales are set to kick off in Autumn with prices starting at just over £10,000.
