Thinking Out Loud: The Media

As I was on YouTube, I watched a rather intriguing upload by Joe Weller on the trustworthiness of the media in light of recent events related to terrorism (See below).

This video got me thinking - the media causes the general public to turn a blind eye to certain events going on in the world solely to enhance the image of anyone their are favourable towards, especially when it comes to political matters. If you have been keeping a watchful eye on the news, you would have discovered the British Government has approved the use of air strikes to combat terrorists in Syria. Despite reaching a conclusion on Wednesday, attacks kicked off in the early hours of Thursday morning. How much did you hear about the level of damage caused by the air strikes on the news? Not much I presume.

It appears as though when attacks do not take place in a neighbouring society, it is not worth mass media coverage. When Paris was struck by terror attacks this year, there was endless coverage of the aftermath on the news and social media trends to unite people from France and all over the world with those affected by the terror attacks. However, when the UK retaliates - inevitably leading to the loss of innocent lives - where is the call for solidarity? Sure enough, the primary objective is to kill enemy groups and the air strikes could generate results in that aspect, but it would be ridiculous to think there won't be causalities sustained to those with no terror links at all. However, the media would give you the impression that politicians are making the right choice and no innocent individuals would suffer because of it. Unless rockets have perfect guilt-sensing technology to eliminate only terrorists, then it is pretty much farcical.

It is worth noting that sending out the message those in power are the ones causing terror to a community of people elsewhere in the world would be counter productive - imagine how much unrest there would be if the media actually did admit the majority of British politicians agreed to wipe out a significant number of innocent civilians. It may sound cruel but as you consume what is provided by the media, you can do your bit by taking what you hear with a pinch of salt and bearing in mind they only give you what they want you to think about - Be open to thinking about the bigger picture.
